Each history month 8th grade AVID posts the impressive people that we remember and recognize for their contributions to the country.
November 1st begins Native American Heritage Month. Native American Heritage Month was first recognized November 1990 when Congress issued a joint resolution authorizing President George H.W. Bush to declare the month of history. Native American Heritage Month is a time to call attention to the culture, traditions, and achievements of the nation’s original inhabitants, and their descendants.
We also want to acknowledge that the land Judkins is sitting on is Chumash land. The history of the people of Pismo Beach started 9,000 years ago. The Chumash referred to this area as the place to find pismu, or tar. The Chumash are known for using an advanced money (bead) system, intricate basketry, cosmic cave paintings, and for being a maritime culture. This month as you walk around our beautiful campus read our biographies about Native Americans, and think about what the land first looked like.
